Exhibition Outline

Shown in this exhibition are artworks that were made by “retelling” existing objects in the form of literary works and other items that involve written text. “Retelling” here refers to the respective artists’ creative practice based on their own explorations and interpretations of those objects, and the works on display reflect how each of the three featured artists approached and executed this procedure. Natsuki Oshiro and Ryo Orikasa chose literary works as source materials, while Haruka Matsumoto’s work is based on news reports on incidents and events within social life. The styles and formats of the exhibited works range from painting to installation, animation, lithography and manga.
In this day and age, when being connected to the Internet and social networking are inseparable parts of everyday life, texts and images are instantly consumed, and worked into algorithms that animate us to consume more. We hope that this exhibition will serve as an opportunity for visitors to sit back, look at written texts and the images they evoke, and reflect on the imaginative and creative power of words.
